Background

The age demographic in Uganda is striking – 50% of all Ugandans are between the ages of 0 and 14.  Although this was a prime factor in the introduction of Universal Primary Education (UPE) in 1996, the statistics regarding school attendance are equally striking.  Less than 2% of children in Uganda attend nursery (pre-primary) school and only 54% of children complete primary school.  The complicating factors for youth are numerous and diverse, ranging from poverty to early pregnancy.

One of the biggest factors in school success is literacy and the ability to access literary materials. However, a reading culture has not yet developed in Uganda and very few children have access to any reading material. In the school system, literacy is addressed in a very rigid manner that produces children with the technical ability to read but without a love of reading and with an inability to read with true understanding.

The Afrikan Yoga and Literacy Project aims to address these concerns through the creation of a children’s literacy centre. The centre will also introduce children to yoga, meditation and healthy living in an attempt to improve the children’s concentration, physical fitness and overall health and wellbeing.

Aims

  • To develop a resource centre that will consist of books and other reading materials alongside audio-visual equipment to aid learning.
  • To provide young people with access to technical, education, historical, metaphysical, and esoteric reading, audio and visual materials.
  • To deliver yoga, meditation and healthy living sessions to young people.
